Cover License Questions

What's the difference between a cover and a sample?
A cover is a new recording of an existing song where you re-perform the composition. A sample is using a portion of the original recording itself. Cover licenses cover re-performances. If you want to use an original recording (sample), you need a separate master-use license — contact us for details.
Do I own my recorded cover version?
Yes. The cover license grants you rights to record and distribute your version. You own the master recording you create — the license only covers the underlying composition rights owned by Ooki's catalog artists.
Can I monetize my cover on YouTube or TikTok?
A mechanical license covers audio streaming and distribution. For YouTube monetization or TikTok usage, you need the Sync Cover License which includes audiovisual sync rights. Both options are available in our application form above.
How long does the license last?
Mechanical licenses are valid for 1 year and can be renewed annually. Album/EP licenses are perpetual — one payment covers unlimited distribution forever. Sync licenses are project-specific and defined by your project's duration.
What if the original artist doesn't want their song covered?
Artists on the Ooki platform must opt-in to make their compositions available for cover licenses. Only songs marked "Cover-Ready" in the catalog are available through this system. If a song isn't available, you'll see it flagged in your search results.
Does the original artist get paid?
Absolutely. 100% of the license fee (minus a small processing fee) is paid directly to the original artist through Ooki's automated royalty system. Artists receive a notification and payment within 7 business days of license issuance.
